Kaolin was formed in 1978 when a group of potters got together, started a cooperative and opened a shop with a gallery on Mariatorget in Stockholm. The around twenty potters who make up Kaolin today are engaged in functional and art pottery and sculpture alongside public decorative work, teaching and other jobs. Kaolin’s shop is the place to appreciate their craft and skill and find unique ceramics. As Kaolin is a cooperative, the members often work in the shop where you can take the opportunity to talk to them about their techniques and their work. We display all our cups in the upstairs room, where at the moment there are about 300 different cups to choose from!
In our gallery we host one-person shows, mainly with guest exhibitors but also by Kaolin’s members. We display the work of Swedish and foreign potters and ceramic artists, and in recent years we have particularly focused on guest exhibitors from our Nordic neighbours. Kaolin is keen to feature new and experimental ceramic art in our exhibitions while also seeking to highlight traditional, high-class craftsmanship and sound practical pottery.
